For nearly a century the Henryetta Labor Day celebration has been providing young and old alike with a day of fun and entertainment.
That celebration takes a lot of work and planning. For a number of years the effort was headed up by Ruby Gooden and a handful of volunteers.
labor dayNow it is taking another step forward with the organizational and management baton to the newly formed Henryetta Parks, Recreation and Tourism Board.
"The City of Henryetta extends a very special 'Thank You' to the former Labor Day Chair, Ruby Gooden and her volunteers, said city manager Ted Graham Thursday.
"I see an opportunity to build on the success of the existing Labor Day program through the vision and dedication of the newly formed board. However, the scope of the Labor Day program in extensive and it will take a team of dedicated community volunteers to assist the board with the task. It’s all about taking ownership of a piece of the event.”
Board Chairperson Jill Francis pointed out "the Labor Day event not only honors the role of labor in America, it also provides an opportunity for community involvement and it brings thousands of visitors to experience Henryetta.”
She said more input and volunteers are being sought to help in the annual project.
"For those interested in joining the Labor Day team, you are encouraged to contact the City at 918-652-3348 or attend the monthly meetings held on the second Thursday of the month at noon in the Henryetta City Hall Council Chambers at 115 S. 4th.  The next scheduled meeting is January 14, 2016," she said.
