The rodeo tradition of Henryetta added another notch this month when Terry Don West and Tornado were inducted into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame.
tornado-crashThe induction ceremony was held in Fort Worth, Tex. It already has one Henryettan, Jim Shoulders, on the wall of honor. He was inducted last year.
This was the second honor for Tornado, the bull owned by Jim Shoulders for some 16 years. In 1979, the 1,800-pound bull was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.
He was known for bucking off 220 cowboys but met his match when Freckles Brown stayed on for eight seconds at the National Finals Rodeo in 1967.
West, who owns and operates a bull riding school in Henryetta, has been winning championships since 1984.
His rides include conquering the infamous bull, Bodacious, not just once but twice. That is a feat that he still shakes his head about.
Both West and Tornado are going to be the guests of honor at a reception May 23 at the Henryetta chamber of commerce.
The reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include Marvin Shoulders telling stories about Tornado. "Everyone is invited to attend and see why Henryetta is the Rodeo Cowboy Capital of the World," said chamber executive director Roy Madden.
