Okmulgee County Commissioners declared a disaster following several storms that swept through the county Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning.
becky readsThe rains flooded a number of creeks causing water to back up in Morris and Beggs. The floods and high winds damaged several homes and buildings. Commissioners said they would be meeting with National Weather Service representatives to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado.
Stormwater caused some damage to roadways in the northern section of the county and a full estimate of the cost is being prepared now.
At one point SH 16 going into Beggs was closed when a railroad underpass was flooded. The storms also caused flooding in Morris and had emergency personnel performing several water rescues.
The emergency disaster declaration was passed at an emergency meeting of the commissioners Wednesday. It will be sent to Oklahoma City in an attempt to get state and federal aid to pay for cleanup and repairs.
