Quinton Story and Emma Kranz of Henryetta and Malcolm Hushbeck of Okmulgee; have recently returned from the 2016 Rural Electric "YouthPower Energy Camp," where they served as delegates from East Central Electric.
energy campThe three were among nearly 90 eighth graders chosen from across the state to represent their local rural electric cooperatives during the four days at Canyon Camp, just east of Hinton.
"The most exciting thing I learned at camp was how the linemen climb electric poles," Kranz said.
"Some highlights of camp were all the people I met and all the things I did," Story said.
While at the camp, delegates attended sessions on energy, electrical safety and rural electric careers. They elected their own Manager and Board of Directors and operated a Coke and Candy Cooperative. Other special activities of the four-day program included hands-on electrical demonstrations, such as pole-climbing and bucket truck rides from linemen, a 13 low-element ropes course, swimming, an energy battle tournament and a trip to Celebration Station for arcade games, go-carts and pizza.
The "YouthPower Energy Camp" is coordinated by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives and East Central Electric Cooperative.
