Henryetta police are on track to set a new record for arrests this year.
handcuffsAccording to chief Steve Norman, his department has made 339 arrests by the end of July not counting the juvenile arrests. The officers have written 1,770 traffic tickets.
"We have been busy just this month alone with 99 arrests," he said.
He pointed out crime statistics in 2009 showed 261 arrests were made.
This summer officers have been busy trying to curtail an increase in auto burglaries. Most of those have been taking place at night which gives the criminals all the advantages.
"It's dark and, if they see headlights, they slink into a dark area out of sight," the chief said.
Officers were able to capture several burglary suspects recently that they believe have been involved in a number of incidents.
"Most of these are juveniles who are looking for a quick and easy way to steal something. They go from place to place and, when they find an unlocked car, they prowl through it." Norman urged residents to make sure they leave nothing of value in their vehicles and lock their cars and trucks up at night.
Those burglary incidents have not been confined to just the Henryetta city limits however. In recent weeks, county deputies have also seen an uptick in the number of thefts  throughout the southern part of the county.
"We are making every effort to patrol the neighborhoods and catch these burglars." The police department has a total of 12 officers.
