The Okmulgee County Sheriffs Office is proud to announce that they have entered into an agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse that now equips Deputies with naloxone, which is an antidote to drugs such as heroin, fentanyl, and other opiate based drugs.naloxone
As part of the Oklahoma Naloxone Initiative the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance abuse has begun partnering with law enforcement agencies across Oklahoma in an attempt to provide them with the lifesaving medicine to combat drug overdoses. This new equipment provides
Deputies, who often encounter subjects suffering from a potentially fatal drug overdose prior to the arrival of other first-responders, a crucial tool to help save the victims life.
With Oklahoma ranking fifth in the nation for drug overdose deaths it has become apparent that steps need to be taken to help those victims suffering from drug overdoses. By taking part in the Oklahoma Naloxone Initiative the Sheriffs Office joins agencies such as the Tulsa Police Department in the effort to help reduce deaths caused from those overdoses.
The Sheriffs Office currently has three certified instructors who will begin training Deputies and equipping them with the lifesaving overdose rescue kit. The Sheriff plans to have all personnel trained and equipped with naloxone by the end of the month.
