That first cup of coffee Saturday morning was stirred when Mother Nature shook the ground.
The 5.6 earthquake in Pawnee County struck at 7:03 a.m., sending out tremors that were felt throughout Oklahoma and much of the Midwest.
earthquakes SaturdayThe epicenter of the quake was located some 14 miles from Pawnee, 84 miles from Henryetta.
Damage in the Henryetta area was restricted to several cracks in sheetrock walls and ceilings. The Guynes family near Wilson said a long crack was noticed in one wall. "The bottom of the crack started from an earthquake a few years ago," Andrea Guynes said.
A crack from a door facing and another in the ceiling was reported by the Shurden family north of Henryetta.
That damage was nothing compared to the destruction around the Pawnee area. An old sandstone building lot in Pawnee had some stones on the outer wall break free. A grocery store in that town had the floors covered with merchandise that was shaken off the shelves.earthquake crack guynes
One person in Pawnee was reported injured when bricks from a chimney struck him. He was said to have been trying to protect a child when the incident happened.
The 5.6 quake matched in intensity, the November 2011 shaker that struck in the Prague area. Many homes were seriously damaged in that earthquake.
