The United States Tennis Association (USTA) upper level Adult Mixed Doubles League will have a Tulsa team competing at the National Championship Tournament in November. The tournament will take place at the “Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex” outside Phoenix, Ariz. stan swyden
Henryettan Stan Swyden will be part of that team. He has been playing tennis since his high school days at the tennis courts on West Main. Joining Swyden on the team are Tulsans and native Oklahomans Richard Alexander (who donated a Hasty Bake Legacy Grill for a raffle the Henryetta Tennis Assoc. used as a fundraiser last year), and others who all donated to Henryetta’s Main Street Court Project….Tim and Sandy Leos (Head Tennis Pro at LaFortune Tennis Center), Mike and Sabrina Nunnelee, Stephen and Keri Hale, and Brandi Redman (former OU women’s tennis player coached by Henryetta’s Mark Johnson).
To qualify for the National tournament, the team first won its local Tulsa league, defeated the Oklahoma City league winner, and went on to defeat league winners from Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas City, and St. Louis at the Missouri Valley Section Championships last weekend in Kansas City.
“What I love about the USTA adult team tennis leagues is that it’s a really fun social environment with a high level of competition at the same time,” says Swyden. “We’re excited about having a chance to go to Arizona and compete for a National Championship! I’ve known most of my teammates since I was a teenager playing competitive tennis. Not bad for a bunch of Okies!!”
