Henryetta students showed their appreciation for the veterans Friday morning.
Members of the elementary, middle school and high school choirs performed several musical salutes as a dozen veterans took center stage as guests of honor.
HHS band director Alan Montgomery presented the history of the Congressional Medal of Honor from it’s inception by the Navy in the Civil War. He pointed out that a Henryettan, Edward Allen Devore, jr., was the recipient of the country’s highest honor.
Devore was a Specialist Fourth Class in Vietnam when his platoon came under fire in
Devore was fatally wounded when his comrades tried to recover others who had been killed or injured. His sacrifice enabled his squad to return safely to their platoon.
First grade students presented the veterans with handmade notes of appreciation for their service.
