After years of looking at the familiar red, yellow and green stop lights, motorists will be seeing something new.
The existing signal lights are old incandescent bulbs and lenses that are no longer available and prone to burning out frequently.
At the Nov. 15 city council meeting, approval was given to spend $15,705 to replace the lights at six locations around town with the new LED lights.
City maintenance director Ron Casey said work would cover all of the lights on Main Street from US 75 to Sixth as well as the set of stop lights at US 75 and Trudgeon.
“They are going out constantly,” said police chief Steve Norman. “Going with the LEDs would increase the time they can be used.”
Along with the decision to purchase the new lights, was an option to purchase a year service contract for $1,800. Casey said SignalTek would reduce the first year contract by $1,500 as an introductory offer.
Casey told the council discussions are also being held to replace existing street lights along Main with new LED lights. That upgrade is expected to cost around $52,000. No decision was made at the council meeting on replacing those lights.
