The New Year weekend traditionally means partying but law enforcement officers are hoping motorists can curtail their fun long enough to drive carefully.
Henryetta police will be out New Years eve looking for drivers who have had too much to drink.
“We will be targeting people who are driving dunk and don’t wear their seat belts,” said Henryetta chief Steve Norman.
Norman said the busiest time for officers are the early morning hours on January 1 but police will be patrolling throughout the night.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will also have officers looking for drivers who have exceeded the legal limit.
They will be trying to limit the number of fatal crashes that have already set a record for 2016.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety office, 652 people have died on state roads and highways this year. That is an increase of 43 from the 2015 totals.
Both Tulsa and Oklahoma City will be seeing the bulk of the enforcement effort.
“We want people to enjoy the holiday,” the Henryetta police chief said, “but we want them to make sure they don’t harm themselves or others.”
