Plans to hold a Valentines dance were scrapped after the antiquated city ordinance against dancing was brought up on social media Thursday.
no danceJoni Insabella originally set the dance in the event room above her store, Rosie Lavon’s on South Fifth Street. It was going to be held Feb. 11 with a DJ and open to adults only.
The plans were scrapped after the original law prohibiting dancing within 500 feet of a church was brought to light by one individual.
“We had hired a disc jockey and already posted flyers,” said Insabella Friday. “There were some people that were going to have an opportunity to add some money to help the area economy. It’s a shame that we had to cancel it.”
The original comments against the dance caused a firestorm of replies by area residents all backing the event.
She pointed out that the decision to cancel the event was made after an accusation that she could go against the law since her husband, John Insabella,” was city attorney.
“John didn’t want anyone to doubt his integrity and be able to accuse him of showing favoritism so we decided to not hold it,” she said.
There are still plans to do a special “Elvis Tribute,” Feb. 25. That will include a special “Dinner with the King” at 6:30 followed by Brent Middens performing at 7:30.
Tickets will be $30 per person.
Henryetta Mayor Jennifer Clason said the ordinances covering dancing will be discussed at the Feb. 21 city council meeting.
