Wellsir, Bunny Cake Day was a success and I want to thank all who wrote in about their Bunny Cake Day celebration. We were fortunate to have two celebrants who had never done the Day before. They also had never hunted Easter Eggs before so now they are all broken in and ready for next year.
OK, so I may decide to also have a May 1st Cookie Day but you all will not have to participate in that. It may be a private celebration.
As you know, first the cake batter has to get mixed up. I do not know how it is at your house but it seems that every year mixing is the most popular activity of the process. The one year old didn't seem particularly thrilled by it but the 13 month old was ready to give it a run. Not sure that boy is afraid of anything. The batter did get battered fairly well and poured into the two cake pans.
There was a moment when not all agreed there was an equal amount in each cake pan but the decision was made to stick it the oven and see what happened. It appeared not everyone agreed but, in this case, about 20 - 25 minutes to mix batter is probably long enough. Go with it!
The plans called for lunch while the cake was baking. However, it seems as though all the big people disappeared and all the little people were well away from the mixing place as to not even exist. As “Pop" turned around a cupla times looking for his dedicated help, he saw somewhere between -0- and nobody, so, guess who cleaned the kitchen, counters, floors and every other place you could imagine that tiny hands could dribble batter. It was fine as Pop needed the time to wonder what happened to his carefully made plans.
Somehow, after a long period of time, lunch was eaten. While lunch was being devoured, ‚Äòscuse me, ‚Äúeaten" the cakes had been in the fridge cooling so careful attention was given to their temperature. Nothing says amateur like grabbing a hot cake pan one thought was cooled and start to yell what one normally yells when touching a metal that is several hundred degrees hot. Then one looks into the eyes of one to six year old children and says, ‚ÄúGolly Gee, don't touch that as it is hot!"  Just to be clear, this didn't happen to me but it could have. I am sticking with that.
After the cleanup crew cleaned the kitchen and nearby areas, it was time to find the decorating crew while the hiding crew hid the eggs. Time sure flies when one is having fun but it drags like an algebra test on a spring Friday afternoon when one is trying to get back on to a semblance of a schedule. And before you think one is a total novice at this, there was a schedule printed off and available. One person looked at it and said, “Hmm." The main participants couldn't read.
Then the best part got started: decorating.  All items had been assembled and little ones were in their places.
After Pop almost got the pieces in the right order, the fur (icing) was put on. The two big kids tried to smooth it out and the 13 month kid tried to eat it off the utensil and the one year looked as if she had never seen any of them before. Even some of the older kids got in on the action now and the fun started. This year it was mostly very young kids spreading so the “fur" looked a little rough. It did not matter.
We colored coconut grass green and spread the grass around the bunny. Easter eggs had to be placed all in the grass and jelly beans are the perfect thing. One tiny boy decided to eat whatever he could reach and there was suddenly a hole in Bunny's bow tie.  Black jelly beans make great eyes and colored ones outline the tie. Someone forgot and left the twisty licorice at home but Gramma came thru like a champ (cooked spaghetti colored in dye) and we had whiskers and mouth.
Picture time! Suddenly bodies appeared from several places and got in the Bunny pictures. After a zillion tries at getting everybody in, it was egg hunting time.
After carefully explaining what eggs went to what size hunter, that plan joined the other plans out the window. It seems that nobody even noticed or cared much. Finding eggs is great no matter if they are yours or... not. Bunny Cake Day started in the early 1990's. I don't know how many more Bunny Cakes I will do, but as long as I can, I certainly will.
