Henryetta area residents wanting to find out more about disc golf are being encouraged to participate in a clinic Saturday morning at Nichols Park.
disc clinicKyle Wilkes, a 20-year disc golf player will be on hand to tell about the game as well as give pointers on how to play. The clinic starts at 11 a.m., and is for all ages.
Wilkes is now a tournament player with Innova Disc Golf. Innova started in the sport in 1983 when company founder Dave Dunipace, invented the first true disc golf disc.
The international company produces discs for every shot from driver to midrange and putters.
“This clinic gives me an opportunity to share the sport with other people, Wilkes said.”I want to educate the community on the game, covering the different style shots, including putting, driving and in between.”
He went on to say the sport is ideal for families since it does not require any investment other than the discs.
“This is a great recreational sport that will let the kids get out of the house away from their computers, iphones and tablets.”
At the clinic the first 25 registered will receive two lightweight practice discs, a marker for designating where their disc lands and a sticker.
The course at Nichols Park is attracting attention statewide as well as from neighboring states.
“It is a beautiful course with a unique topography,” Wilkes said. “Oftentimes you see courses in flatter areas that are more traditional. “The slopes and wind coming off the water make this a great place to play.”
Discs to play the sport are commonplace in sporting goods stores and hobby shops in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Now they are available at Jiffy Mart in Henryetta.
