Henryetta area youngsters let their minds soar Monday as the library’s summer reading program came to a close.
Donna Lovell was the guest speaker telling the children about flight and describing how airplanes used science to stay in the air.
Lovell is a member of the Henryetta Flying Club. She described the cockpit instruments and even let the children get the feel of piloting as they donned a real pilot’s helmet complete with earphones and microphone.DSCF2122
She told the children that pilots have to spend some 20 minutes going over their airplanes before they even start the engines. That preflight work includes checking fuel tanks, oil levels, control surfaces on the wings, tail and landing gear.
Once that check is finished, the pilot still has to make sure their compass is working and have all maps on hand.
As she enthralled the children about flight, she encouraged them to look into becoming a pilot and taking the training and get a pilot’s license when they are 17 years old.
While most children see jets and single-engine airplanes flying overhead, Lovell presented photos of other flying craft including gliders, hot air balloons and even the Goodyear blimp.
After her talk, the children were able to make their own planes, lightweight gliders that they flew in the civic center then took home.
Children enrolled in the summer reading program still have until August 3 to read as many books as possible to be eligible for prizes including subscriptions to National Geographic and Kids National Geographic.
