HHS coach Lance Beck told Henryetta Rotary club members the football team that will hit the field next month, “is not the same Henryetta team,” as in the past.
Beck said the team has been spending the summer going through weightlifting and conditioning work that will be paying off once the season starts. “We had guys going from lifting barely 200 to over 300 pounds. A freshman is squatting 320 pounds.”
During those sessions that started June 3, there have been between 18 to 33 players consistently turning out to participate in the program. “Their attitude is great. They have confidence in themselves.”
Those numbers have created an issue for the football program. With 45 to 50 players who will be on the field in the fall, more equipment is needed.
“We had to buy more jerseys just to suit them up.”
To help with that added expense, the Henryetta Quarterback club has scheduled a car show July 27 at the football field.
Beck said everyone is invited to enter a car or just attend the show that starts at 8 that morning. There is a $35 entry fee for the cars or motorcycles and a $3 admission charge. He said little league football players or cheerleaders will be able to attend free of charge.
During the day, refreshments will be served including barbecue, cotton candy and soft drinks as well as a live band. Thehenryettan.com will be on hand live streaming the show.
Besides the car show, Beck has scheduled a pie auction and silent auction. There will be footballs and jerseys signed by all the team members on the auction block.
“We are trying to make it where it is good for everybody. We want the wives and kids to come out and have fun.”
Members of the HHS coaching staff and football players are working with the little league football teams in a two-day camp Thursday and Friday. The young players will be put through the drills and have fun. “It starts with the youth program,” he said. “We want them to learn our core values.”
Beck said anyone who would like to donate to the car show with prizes, auction items or more can contact the officers of the Quarterback Club.
They include: Misty Sweeney, president; Deana Hart, vice-president; Carla Rice, treasurer and Winter Whitlock, secretary.
