When the 26th edition of the Jim Shoulders Living Legends Rodeo starts August 31, contestants in the rough stock events will be coming out of new chutes.
Work is underway to replace the nearly 25-year-old bucking chutes at the arena at Nichols Park.new chutes
The new chutes arrived earlier this month and volunteers were busy this week cutting away and dragging off the old ones.
When finished, four new bucking chutes will be in place with some improvements the cowboys and rigging crews will appreciate. With the old chutes, everyone had to stand on two-inch by eight-inch planks that, in some cases were so weathered they could barely support the individuals. Those plants were also the wrong height requiring the riders to crawl up and over the steel pens.
old chutesThe new chutes have fold-down metal platforms that improve safety for all participants.
Replacement of the chutes costs $28,700 but rodeo committee members said they will last for many more years.
That enhancement comes just in time since the Labor Day rodeo will be sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PCRA). That sanction is expected to bring a larger contestant base and even some participants who will be qualifying for the National Rodeo Finals.
The Chamber of Commerce puts on the rodeo each year but the arena, bucking and roping chutes and grandstands belong to the city of Henryetta.
