Henryetta Chamber of Commerce executive director Roy Madden is going to be inducted into the Military Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in October.
Madden, who was born in Holdenville, joined the Air Force in 1967, serving four years in personnel and finance at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.madden
After leaving the Air Force, he became the Recreation Manager and later Stable Manager for MCB 29 Palms, Calif. It was in this role that he became involved in military rodeo when he was building equine recreation programs for the base. He developed a base rodeo team, secured funding and directed construction of a covered multi-purpose riding arena.
He also worked with the command structure to obtain rodeo equipment, bleachers, bucking stock, timed event stock, and a bucking machine that helped the team train. Madden was responsible for the first rodeo on the base and worked with other installations to initiate rodeo programs on their bases.
Madden was one of the co-founders of the Military Rodeo Association (MRA) and helped write a standardized rule book, built membership and established a system for qualifying for the military finals rodeo. He has actively competed in PRCA, open rodeos, and the National Police Rodeo Association winning their TR title in 1983.
After retiring from federal service in 2002, Roy moved to the Weleetka area where he operates a small ranch operation. He is secretary for the Henryetta Economic Development Authority as well as executive director the chamber. He also serves on the Weleetka Pride Committee. He has been active as a singer and songwriter and enjoys performing cowboy music wherever he can.
The induction ceremony will be held Oct. 24 at the Ramada hotel and convention center in Topeka, Kans.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to be selected with this class” said Madden. “This group includes so many great contributors that made military rodeo such a success. I admire and appreciate what each of them have accomplished and what they’ve done for our sport.”
Along with Madden, other inductees include: Steve Wood, Cotton Rosser, Wayne Boney, Joseph “Sonny” Borrelli and William “Bill” Stepp.
