For the first time in Henryetta history Memorial Day services will not be held at Westlawn Cemetery.
IMG 0501Organized by the VFW Post 539 and American Legion Hut 85, the services have long been a tradition to honor the servicemen and women from the area.
“Because of the COVID19 pandemic, we elected to hold a virtual Memorial Day service this year,” said VFW Post Commander Bill Goodner.
The Memorial Day service video will be available on Facebook as well as Thehenryettan.com website starting Memorial Day morning.
“This decision was a difficult one for us to make but we felt it was in the best interest of everyone who normally attends the program,” Goodner said.
The two veterans organizations will be placing some 2,500 flags on the graves of veterans in Henryetta as well as cemeteries at Sonora, Wilson and Weleetka.
Volunteers are being sought to help put those flags out starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The flags will be picked up Monday at 4 p.m.
“We have been fortunate to have a lot of volunteers who help every year and appreciate all the help we can get,” Goodner added.
