Wellsir, summer is about over and I have not been fishing one time. And, I have not been on any trips, visited different places nor have I flown in an airplane. I have been here and worked hard getting nothing accomplished. There is no telling how much I could avoid if I put my mind to it. If I weren't so old I could get a job to fill in my empty hours.
OK, those of you who snickered and sniggled, that is my story and I am sticking with it. Even my volunteer job has changed to the point of almost non-existence, but I told you that already.
As an aside, during my decades of teaching in three different countries, I came across kids who did not like to read. This is my first experience of knowing an adult in a leadership role who actually dislikes books and would like to do away with them. My sister taught me to read when I was about five years old and I haven't stopped yet.
Sometimes it is difficult to read, giving the state of my old eyeballs, but I soldier on and love it. My problem is I cannot read enough. So, taking that into consideration, one can probably see why the bibliophobe and I are on opposite sides of the fence he built.
Just in case you have been living on the moon or on Mars the past few months, we have had a very unusual spring. It has rained more during the “spring" months than it should rain in a about two-three years. The constant rains have stopped but there is still flooding. Our U.S. Senator, Senator Snowball, is even older than I am but he has not acknowledged that getting a Lustrum's amount of rain in two months is very unusual in Oklahoma.
All that rain did a great deal to limit my bee keeping activities. Some of the beeks who have room enough for a dedicated building were ready when the sun came out. I wasn't as running an electric saw in the rain is not conducive for good health. OR-- sawing straight lines for that matter. I waited for the sun and BOY did I ever get what I waited for.
The temp went from a rainy 60F to 99F almost overnight.  Some of you have guessed, and some of you have mentioned that I too old to be doing real work at that temperature. But no one has told me how to get anything done during a constant cloud burst. If it is going to rain that much I needed to learn some new techniques.
I found that napping worked quite well. When it was 95+F I could nap for maybe an hour before giving up working outside for that day. That is, until after 7:PM when it cooled down into the 80's. If the daytime temperature was only in the upper 80's then I could nap for about an hour until it cooled down to 75F or less.
However, when one works with or around bees one learns quickly that bees get very territorial starting about sundown. They will come out in a large bunch and chase off any predator who is dumb enough to wait all day to do things. Oh, that is what I have heard, of course, I probably have never gone running back to the house screaming like a little girl at Halloween who sees a monster behind her with a green Frankenstein face. Uhh, I have heard of people doing that.
But then I re-thought the fishing thing. At my age I can have a lifetime license for free and I have tackle, poles, and can dig worms. You people who think I am being lazy for not fishing, pay attention. A close friend went fishing with a buddy and they caught about 30 fish. To me that is a year's supply but he knows how to clean and cook fish. He was taking some of his fish to a neighbor when he had a massive heart attack and is still in the hospital where he will be for some time.
If that is what fishing will do, then I think I shall give it a pass. No need tempting fate, I have done that too much already. My neighbors would look at me lying there and say, “You know, you probably ought to call 911. I'll look up the number for you if you have your phone handy."
Maybe I should stick with less strenuous pursuits, such as teaching little boys how to hit a baseball or wrestling for very active littler boys who have more energy than a coal fired power station. All in all, I am sorry for missing spring and hope summer lasts until December.
