Four Henryetta high school students achieved the top honors in the OSSAA State Vocal Solo/Ensemble Contest in Oklahoma City Thursday.
Earning a Superior (highest rank) were soloists Caveryn Foster and Justin Yount and and ensemble of Jasmine Cantrell and Justin Yount.
Excellent (next highest rank) ranking went to soloists Mylei Brinkley, Liberty Easter, Allana Lawrence, Jayson Scott, and Camrynn Watkins.
“I’m very proud of these students,” said choir teacher Karen Willis. “We consistently have choir members qualifying for State Vocal Solo/Ensemble contest. This speaks to the quality of our musicians.”
The next time the students perform will be at the spring choir concert Tuesday, April 30 at the Alice Ghostly auditorium. The high school and middle school choir will be featured.

For the third time the Henryetta high school band has been asked to be a part of a national observance. Twice before, in 2013 and 2019, the band has marched in the National Memorial Day parade in Washington D.C. Band director Alan Montgomery talks about the latest invitation to that event.

band win

The Henryetta high school band keeps on impressing judges. This week band members received superior ratings at the district competition and will be heading to state contest later this month at Ada. “We received a 1 in sight reading and that is a big accomplishment,” said band director Alan Montgomery. “That means the band was given a musical score they had never seen before and played it in front of the judges with only a short time to understand it. That speaks volumes about how talented our kids are.”

Henryetta High School Honor Choir

For the first time in at least a decade, Henryetta high school will have choir members going to state competition.
At a district contest in Tahlequah Tuesday the HHS advanced honor choir had an excellent rating for their sight reading contest. That, coupled with their stage performance superior rating, they qualified for the state contest.
During the district contest, the Henryetta Middle School choir composed of seventh and eighth grade students received an excellent rating on their sight reading contest and superior rating on the state performance.
Choir instructor Karen Willis pointed out the sight reading contest is a test of the student’s abilities. “This called for them to perform music that the students have never seen before. There is no rehearsals and time to study the music score.”
The state contest will be held March 29 and 29 at Carl Albert high school in Midwest City.
