1 40 fireFiremen were called to a blaze along Interstate 40 Monday afternoon.
The fire was apparently started by a cigarette thrown from a passing vehicle that ignited the grass along the pavement. Whipped along by gusty winds, the fire quickly spread into a pasture and blackened nearly 60 acres before it was brought under control.
This was one of several fires that erupted around the area over the past four days.
A large fire swept through tree-covered hilly terrain east of Dewar. That fire started Thursday and was not brought under control until late Saturday.
"Even though there is a chance of rain late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, it is not going to be a soaking rain that would prevent grass fires from spreading," said fire chief David Bullard.
Thenext appreciable rain chance is expected April 11.
