A Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness event is set Wednesday, May 4 by the  The Muscogee (Creek) Nation. It will be held from 3:30  to 6:00 pm at that Claude Cox Omniplex Dome in Okmulgee. The come and go event features an interactive version of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Quiz.
"The purpose of this awareness event is to focus the attention of teens, adults and the community on the importance of avoiding too-early pregnancy and parenthood by beginning the conversations," said Nancy Mason, Mvskoke Nation Youth Services Director.
preg proc“Too often, people are afraid to talk about teen pregnancy.  We avoid acknowledging it and avoid conversations with young people about how to make the right choices.” She pointed out Oklahoma is currently number two in the nation for teen pregnancies for youth ages 15 to 19.  "This event will help participants to begin those important conversations and become informed about community efforts and resources available.”
As part of the event, Henryetta mayor Jennifer Clason signed a proclamation designating May 4 as the National Day to Prevent Teen pregnancy for Henryetta.
That proclamation urged all residents to participate in the activities and help raise awareness of the importance of the issue.
The Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Event is a collaboration with the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Movement which is a local effort in Okmulgee County focusing on this issue.
It is open to youth, parents, educators, and community members.  Although the focus is on prevention, there will be resources for pregnant and/or parenting teens.  Also, there will be an opportunity for HIV and Hepatitis C testing onsite.  Snacks and a limited number of t-shirts will be available for participants completing the interactive quiz.  Questions can be directed to Mason at: 918-549-2557 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
