The 5th annual “Crystal Run" will be held in downtown Okemah March 7, at 11 a.m. The event is held each year as a major fund raiser for Okemah's historic “Crystal Theater". Funds from the event are used to maintain and operate the theater which not only shows first run movies 7 nights per week, but also serves as a music venue for the Woody Guthrie Celebration each July.
Crystal run organizer, Tessa Russell, states: “This has become an event that Okemans and people from surrounding communities look forward to each year. I usually start getting inquiries months in advance of the run." Russell went on to say, “We would like to thank all of the people and businesses who sponsor and promote the Crystal Run each year. It has drawn our community closer together and shines a positive light on Okemah."
This year entrants will receive a T-shirt with a design concept inspired by a painting by, Tessa Russell. Tulsa graphic artist, Keith Whitfield, put his spin on the design to adapt it to the event and the results may possibly be the best of all the Crystal Run t-shirts.
Entrants will also receive a goody bag with samples, and other fun and useful items.
Prior to the 5K run, a 1K fun run will be held. Participants in both events will receive the t-shirt and goody bag. Entrants are welcome to run, jog or walk. Race organizer Russell reiterates, “Everyone is encouraged to take part regardless of conditioning or athletic abilities." The run is a timed event on a certified course. Medals will be awarded to the top 2 male and female finishers in each age category. The business or organization with the most entries will receive a plaque.
Cost to enter the 5K prior to Feb. 22 will be $25.00 and the Fun Run is $15. All entrants registered prior to the deadline will receive a t-shirt. After the deadline the cost increases $5 for each event. The Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 11 a.m. in front of the Crystal Theater at 401 West Broadway.

The Crystal Theater was built in 1921 as a Vaudeville theater, and remodeled in 1931. It's design was inspired by Tulsa's Ritz Theater, with floating clouds, twinkling stars, stained glass lights and cut velvet upholstered seats. With it's balcony and orchestra pit, the Crystal Theater is one of very few historical theaters left in Oklahoma. The theater has been recently remodeled and is operated by Okemah's CIA.
