Even though the last of summer is here and the heat still around, cold weather is coming soon.
Members of the First Christian Church in Henryetta is trying to make sure local residents don't suffer from that chill.
first christianThe church has started a coat drive according to youth pastor Shawn Davis.
"It's for the entire community," he said. "There's no requirement to come to church and no money is involved."
He said the church is accepting donations of gently-worn coats as well as other clothing items for boys and girls as well as adults. People can leave the clothing items at the church office or contact him or pastor Jerrod Dumond. "They can even leave them at the bottom of the steps. We will wash them and put it to good use. Our main concern is putting sleeves on kids' arms and food in their bellies."
The church has a food pantry as well that is getting revived. It started in 2011 and Davis said he wants to make sure kids and families have plenty to eat.
The church youth meet on Wednesday night and, "there's always a meal. It could be soup and grilled cheese sandwiches or tacos. You never know what you are gong to get."
Those meals are not just for church children, he hastened to point out. "Everyone is welcome. We don't require anyone to come to church."
