October is Breast Cancer awareness month and the staff at Hillcrest Henryetta wants to encourage all women over 40 to get their mammogram.
Finding breast cancers early with mammography has meant that many more women being treated for breast cancer are able to keep their breasts. When caught early, localized cancers can be removed without resorting to breast removal (mastectomy).mammogram
Important things to know about mammograms
  • They can save your life. Finding breast cancer early reduces your risk of dying from the disease by 25-30% or more. Women should begin having mammograms yearly at age 40, or earlier if they're at high risk.
  • Don't be afraid. Mammography is a fast procedure (about 20 minutes), and discomfort is minimal for most women. The procedure is safe: there's only a very tiny amount of radiation exposure from a mammogram.
  • The American Cancer Society recommends these cancer screening guidelines for most adults. Screening test are used to find cancer before a person has any symptoms.
  • Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so.
  • Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
  • Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.
  • Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.
To celebrate each woman that gets a mammogram done in October, each lady will receive a pink carnation.
