James Carl Coale has been identified as the individual shot by an Okfuskee County deputy Saturday evening.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Coale, 37, is alleged to have been trying to run over the deputy after a traffic stop.
The incident was said to have started earlier in the day when lawmen were looking for a vehicle involved in a stabbing. When deputies stopped the vehicle Coale reportedly tried to run over the deputy. Several shots were fired at the vehicle striking the victim. He died at the scene.
The OSBI was called in to investigate the shooting and have been interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
The deputy was not named.
Some family friends are disputing that Coale was the person involved in the stabbing.
