In less than 100 days, several hundred volunteers will be gathering at Cameron Stadium for the annual Relay for Life.
That effort started Tuesday night with the henryetta Relay kickoff party at the Methodist Church.
kickoffHenryetta chair Amber Smith said she was thrilled with the turnout of some 50 people and announced seven teams have already signed up. She pointed out teams can be composed of a single family or an entire business organization. Each team member is asked to raise $100 in donations.
Anyone wishing to form a team or join a team can register at www.Relayforlife.org/HenryettaOK.
The goal is to have 15 teams participating in the ten-hour-long event trying to raise $30,000 in fundraising and $10,000 in sponsorships.
“Relay is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society,” she said. “We all get together to fight cancer and bring awareness of the disease to the public.
One of the most visible parts of Relay is the luminaria sacks that circle the football field. Each is dedicated to a family member or friend who has either been lost to cancer or has defeated the disease. Those are on sale for $5 each and may be purchased through Joann Hott at the Henryetta public library.
In February and March, team captain meetings will be held not he second Monday of each month at Cowboy Corner at 6 p.m.
Another highlight of the henryetta Relay is the Survivors’ Walk. Cancer survivors join together and walk around the football field signifying their determination to win over cancer.
“I am challenging everyone to talk to five people about Henryetta Relay this week,” Smith said. We urge everyone to tell them about our goals and how we are fighting cancer.”
