Henryetta residents are mulling over the letter that accompanied their water bills this month.
The letter was an explanation of a $6 surcharge that will be on each bill. The money, according to the letter, is needed, “to generate funds to pay the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector for a Special Audit requested by misinformed residents of our city.”
That audit, circulated in October is estimated to cost between $50,000 and $75,000.
Council members said the cost of the budget is not an item that was included in the annual city budget.
“It is very unfortunate that we had to add the surcharge to every meter,” said mayor Jennifer Clason. “When a few citizens force an audit the expense must be covered.”
She said many of those who signed the petition were told it was to reduce their water bill. “If you were told that, I urge you to contact Paula Morris and let her know.”
“Until the absurd audits stop, we must fund them. Please read what you sign and talk to your council members before you cause any other unnecessary audits,” she added.
