Traffic was diverted from going under the I-40 underpass Monday afternoon. A large double billboard tower is leaning at a precarious angle after being subjected to the high winds during the past several days.
No word has been given when the roadway would re-open. Traffic going south is being sent west of town then to Creek Mine Road. Lamar Sign company officials have been notified about the issue.
“We are afraid that the sign would topple over and fall across the roadway,” said fire chief David Bullard.
From the Interstate, the angle of the sign can be seen contrasted to a large cellphone tower and the highway information sign.
