Just in time for the spring storm season, a plan for the use of the Henryetta school safe room has been completed.
That plan was announced Thursday night at a special school board meeting.safe room
According to Dwayne Noble, school superintendent, the safe room is included in the construction of the new elementary school.
If there is a danger of a tornado during school hours, elementary and kindergarten students will be going to the new building.
After hours, the building will be available to the general public. “The facility will be readied for occupancy when a tornado watch or warning is issued,” Noble said.
That will signal the Henryetta fire department to open the building.
When the building is in use by the public, no weapons, alcohol or tobacco products will be allowed.
Pets are not allowed unless they are service animals. If a person does have a service animal, they need to come to the school and fill out a special form. radios and music devices can  only be used with individual ear phones.
“We want this to be a service to the community,” Noble said. The elementary building safe room is one of two that will be available in the coming weeks. The second is at the S.T.E.M. building across from the middle school.
Both buildings feature reinforced walls, a concrete roof and heavy metal covers that lock across the windows from the inside.
At the Thursday night meeting, the board also accepted resignations from Jean Price and James Donley.
Board members approved paying $382.54 which is half of the airplane ticket for Liz Bealko. She is an HHS graduate who is coming from New York to direct the musical,”25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” that will be performed next month.
