Volunteers and Relay teams did not let the high wind phase them Saturday as they held the 2017 Henryetta Relay for Life.
The annual event is designed to raise money to fight cancer and included a number of teams setting up booths at the football field from 2 p.m. until midnight.
The event started off with the Survivors' lap that featured nearly 50 cancer survivors carrying the Relay banner. Later in the evening, a special lap was held in memory of Nathan George. That lap saw over 200 people including some 125 classmates for the Henryetta sophomore who lost his batttle to the disease earlier this month.
Capping off the evening was the luminaria ceremony. Over 2,000 lighted bags bearing the names of loved ones who succumbed to the disease, are currently dealing with it or have defeated cancer were lined around the football field. Their names were read off as teams, family and friends paid a quiet homage to them.
Relay started off with the annual Survivors' Dinner held Thursday night at the First United Methodist Church. Click here to see that story and photos.
