A young life tragically cut short nearly 50 years ago is going to be commemorated Friday morning.

The Lance Corporal Anthony Warren Grundy Memorial Highway is going to run from the west side of Henryetta to the intersection with the Indian Nation Turnpike.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has been placing the signs on I-40 and will be presenting a replica of the sign to Grundy’s relatives Friday morning at city hall.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will include members of the Henryetta VFW and American Legion as well as officials from ODOT and the Department of Public Safety commissioner Michael Thompson.
Grundy was only 20 years old when he died in an explosion in Quang Nam province in Vietnam.
The son of W.R. and Lavania Grundy, the Henryettan was a Lance Corporal with Company L, 3rd Battalion, First Marines on July 7, 1968 when he died,
He was a part of Henryetta, going to school at Webster elementary then was part of the HHS class of 1965. He joined the Marine Corps in 1966.
Grundy is buried in Clearview after his family was told there was not space available to inter him with the other veterans at Westlawn Cemetery. At Clearview there is a memorial for those who died for their country. This past year, Grundy’s name was added to the plaque on the Doughboy standing in front of the Henryetta Library.
Bruce Jones, publisher of Thehenryettan.com contacted Senator Thompson before the start of the 2016 legislature session and requested the highway designation. House Bill 2268 was passed unanimously that year dedicating the roadway in his name.
