Okmulgee County is one of 16 counties in Oklahoma that is included in a major disaster declaration request by Gov. Mary Fallin Thursday.
deep fork mayThe storms from May 16 through 20 caused extensive flooding, power outages and dangerous travel conditions in the impacted counties with 38 tornadoes reported during that period. Three of them were designated as EF2 striking Hanna, Elk City and Muskogee.
Counties included in the request were: Alfalfa, Beckham, Cherokee, Coal, Cotton, Delaware, Johnston, LeFlore, Murray, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Roger Mills and Washita.
The northern part of Okmulgee County received much of the brunt from those storms while the Henreytta area saw localized floding.
If approved, the designation would deliver federal funding to assist municipalities, counties and rural electric cooperatives with infrastructure repairs, debris removal, and costs associated with responding to the storm.
