The HHS band is getting ready for a new school year and new marching year according to band director Alan Montgomery.
He said the students have been busy this summer learning the new rhythm and blues music that will be performed during the football season.
“Our field show is going to be a Ray Charles series,” he said. “We are going to play “Green Onions,” and “Hit the road, Jack.” Montgomery said that should give the band a “big sound” and having fun.
Last year’s graduation made a dent in the numbers with ten graduating. He said there are 35 members now and everyone has been, “working hard” this summer.
Zachary Dickey will be the drum major this year. He is the son of Jenny parker and Kenny Wayne.
A new program planned for the students this year will be a special punt, pass and kick contest Sept. 30. It will be held before the Saturday afternoon little league football game. Youngsters will be showcasing their abilities with prizes being awarded.
On Oct. 17, a special “parent concert” will be held on the football field. “Anybody is welcome to watch,” Montgomery said. The free show will feature the band presenting their marching show then parents will be invited to come onto the field and stand next to their child while the music is being played. “This way they can hear the contribution their child gives to the band.”
He said students are anticipating the arrival of the new uniforms. “We hope to have them for the Christmas parade. If it is raining or bad weather, we will wear the old ones.”
