Fredo Sherwood “Chubby” Anderson died Aug. 27, 2017 at his home in Okemah at the age of 81. He was born April 16, 1936 in Okemah, Oklahoma to Perry Anderson Sr. and Gertrude (Morrow) Anderson.
Chubby was a longtime resident of the Okemah area and a graduate of Pharoah High School. He later attended Bacone College and North Eastern University. Chubby and Pat Upshaw were married August 8, 1958. Chubby worked for 18½ years at the P.P.G. glass plant in Henryetta. He later worked for 43 years with the Muscogee Creek Nation and most recently as a case worker with their Reintegration Program. Chubby received numerous awards during his life including the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Volunteer of the Year for 1999 and AARP Oklahoma Indian Elder Honoree 2012. He coordinated the Ayuda Toy Drive with Rahway Prison in the 70’s providing toys to Muscogee children and also trained boxers at the McAlester State Penitentiary in the 70’s. In 2009 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Reintegration Program and Creek Nation and was selected as a Muscogee Creek Nation Living Legend in 2017.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eugene.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Anderson of the home; three sons: Sherwood Anderson and wife Rebecca of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Derrick Anderson and wife Janet of Okemah and Fred Standley of LaQuinta, Calif.; two daughters, Regina Ishmael and husband Mike of Okemah and Shelly Hagy and husband Mike of Okemah; one brother, Perry Anderson Jr. and wife Ina of Eufaula; one sister, Kaye Smith and husband Pat of Okemah; 13 grandchildren, Chris Standley, Brent Standley, Bryan and Hannah Anderson, Josh and Shaylin Ishmael, Lindsey Anderson, Matt and Carson Ishmael, J.P. Hagy, Krista and Dustin Jones, Kim Standley, Elijah and Mia Hagy, Blake Anderson, Kara Anderson and Lauren Anderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Mark Clark, Larry Milner, Vince Adams, Todd Standley, Louis Hicks and Bill Cline.
Honorary bearers include David Martin, Bob Boone, Mike Jones, Mack Thompson, Donnie Peters, Max Henry, Vernon Davault, Easter Sunday Fixico and the Reintegration Program Employees.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Okemah High School Panther Dome in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Okemah. Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Newman Frank.
