Veterans from Dewar and the surrounding area were the guests of honor Thursday morning as Dewar students paid them tribute for their atriotism.
The annual Veterans Day program at Dewar was held at the First Baptist church and included recognition of each veteran.
Guest speaker Brandon McConnell pointed out "military men and women know the risk and they accept the risk so we don't have to." He related the story of Sgt. Mike Rose who served in Vietnam. A medic and Special Forces member, he was wounded several times in his first mission in 1970. That was followed by a second fight lasting four days with all of his men wounded. He eventually received the Congressional  Medal of Honor for his service.
McConnell said he showed a refusal to quit and that same trait is evident in the military today. He said veterans suffer not only in combat but also after they return home.
Following the program, veterans and their families were treated to a breakfast and presented several gifts from the students.
