As the days without rain continue to mount up, the odds of dangerous grass fires are increasing according to fire chief David Bullard.
Fire crews from Henryetta, Plainview and Wilson were called west of town to extinguish a 10-acre blaze Monday morning. The fire was contained to a pasture and some nearby homes escaped damage.
"We have ot had any measurable rain for over a month," Bullard Said. "The pastures are extremely dry and will go up in flames within a matter of a few seconds."
He warned against any kind of burning until some rain does fall in the county.
In late November, over 1,000 acres of wooded area and pastures went up in smoke south and east of Henryetta. Those fires took several days to contain due to the rugged terrain.
"This is an unusual December. We have had temperatures well above normal and low humidity. That, coupled with the winds that have been blowing all month, combine to become a dangerous situation."
He pointed out a great part of the northeastern section of Oklahoma is under a red flag warning and expected Okmulgee County to be included either late Monday or Tuesday.
