soil samples

Workers spent several days gathering soil samples this week just south of the Henryetta Iron and Metal operation on West Main.
The samples will be tested for any pollution that may have washed off from the decades-old salvage operation onto neighboring properties.
Tests have already been performed by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) on property on both sides of Main Street.
An EPA spokesman on the scene said the samples were being taken from the yards of three residences as well as the ditches. They will be tested by the ETTL Engineers and Consultants labs in Texas and results turned over to the EPA.
Several years ago, some barrels said to contain normally-occuring radioacive material were removed from the area and disposed of by the EPA. That material was said to have been present as a result of oil drilling operations.
