Around 30 Henryetta teachers rode two buses and more carpooled Monday to be part of the rally at Oklahoma City.
They, along with tens of thousands of teachers from around the state were calling attention to the lack of classroom funds appropriated by the legislature.
teach okcLast week, lawmakers approved a $6,000 raise for teachers but did not fund the full amount that was needed according to the Oklahoma Education Association.
The walkout Monday closed Henryetta schools and classes will continue to be dark until at least next Tuesday.
The Henryetta school board approved plans for the walkout through April 9 and will be addressing the issue at their regularly scheduled board meeting that evening.
A number of teachers are planning to return to the Capitol Tuesday and be there every day in an effort to get added money for education.
Requests for statements from Sen. Roger Thompson and State Rep. Scott Fetgatter were made Monday by Thehenryettan.com but neither have replied as yet.
In the meantime, some students are receiving noon meals through both the First Baptist and First United Methodist churches. The free meals are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the week.

teacher okc signsHenryetta juniors were scheduled to take their ACT tests April 3. Those tests will still be administered at the high school from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Several teachers are planning to be on hand for those tests.
