The Henryetta civic center is going to be rocking this summer as the library’s summer reading program gets underway.
This year the theme is, Libraries Rock,” and each of the six weeks will see youngsters introduced to a variety of music.
Librarian Joann Hott said the program series starts June 4 and will be held each Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Usually the program is open to first through fifth grade but this year students from sixth through eighth grade are being invited to attend.
“Children can sign up for the reading program at the library starting Tuesday, May 29,” she said. “We are inviting youngsters throughout the area to read all summer through Aug. 1 to get some prizes.”
Those prizes will be awarded by the number of minutes they read. “Every 15 minutes a child reads, they get a sticker to put on their record. At the end of the summer, that record needs to be brought by the library to receive prizes.”
Those prizes range form a door hanger and pocket folder to a plastic book bag. Anyone completing their 50 stickets will have their name entered into a drawing for a year subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine.
Starting off the summer program June 4 will be Lyle Stogner giving music history. On June 11, Kent Pharoah will be on hand to talk about the history of bagpipes and performing for the kids. June 8 will have David Jobes, Dewar band director, talking about music and motion. July 2 will see Marcus Whitworth performing and on June 9, Henryetta band director Alan Montgomery will be the guest speaker.
