Vena Altstatt Langwell, a former longtime resident of Henryetta and currently of Broken Arrow died Oct. 12, 2018 in Broken Arrow at the age of 93. She was born June 22, 1925 in Keota to Claude R. and Sadie (Mullenix) Altstatt.
Growing up in Dustin, Vena was the oldest of three children. She and her siblings, Melbourn and J. C. (Pete) Altstatt helped to work the family peanut farm. During high school she met her high school sweetheart, Thomas Langwell and they were married in 1942. Tom joined the army shortly thereafter and she remained in Dustin until her graduation in 1943. Upon graduation, determined to join her husband, she started hitchhiking to join Tom in Oregon where he was stationed. Vena got a job and stayed in Oregon until he was shipped overseas and she started the journey back to Oklahoma. After making it about half way, she ran out of money and made a call to her parents admitting she was in trouble. Her dad came to her rescue and brought her back to Dustin.
In 1945, Vena and Tom made their home in Henryetta, Oklahoma where they raised two children, Tommy and Linda. Vena worked many years at Boerstler Brothers as warehouse manager. In 1975 the couple made a move to Broken Arrow to be closer to family.
Vena was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, her parents, her two brothers and her daughter, Linda Langwell Baker.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Tom and Judy Langwell of Broken Arrow; her son-in-law Matthew Baker of Bixby; granddaughter Sharon Kerr and husband Michael of Broken Arrow; granddaughter Jennifer Robinson and husband Michael of Tulsa; three great granddaughters: Rhianna Langwell, Riley Robinson and Morgan Kerr; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Viewing for Vena will be held Oct. 16, 2018 from noon until 8 p.m. at Integrity Funeral Service in Henryetta.
A graveside funeral service for Vena will be held Oct. 17, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Westlawn Cemetery with Rev. Jack Vance officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Integrity Funeral Service of Henryetta.
