flanaryHenryetta physician Dr. Clayton Flanary was one of nearly 3,000 contestants at the 12th annual Ironman triathalon in Louiville Kentucky this weekend.
The 140-mile race included a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride down River Road into Oldham County and Henry County and back, and a 26.2-mile run in Louisville to Churchill Downs and back to the finish line at Fourth Street.
Americans Chris Leiferman and Jen Spieldenner were the champions. Leiferman took the men's professional event with a time of 7 hours, 34 minutes and 8 seconds, while Spieldenner finished in 8:43.22 to claim the women's pro event in cool conditions.
Weather conditions also caused officials to shorten the swim- which some said could be disappointing, but was a smart move. Ironman Louisville kicked off Sunday just before 8:00 a.m. on the Ohio River after early morning rain caused strong currents on the river a delay.
