On Nov. 11, the “War to End All Wars,” came to an end 100 years ago.
johnThat war cost over 116,700 American lives including 726 of the 85,000 Oklahomans who went to Europe. Of those Oklahomans, 19 were from Henryetta and have been memorialized on the doughboy plaque at the library. They include: Martin Adams, Frank Anderson, Balie Arnold, Hubert Banks. S.A. Barrie, William Bailley, H.E. Boerstler, Albert Croy, Norman Cullen, John Duncan, Gavin Guthrie, E.O. Haislip, Harry Kulas, Gilbert Moore, Cecil Phillips, J.F. Teague, Charles Tippie, Guisseppe Tucci and Earl Wadsworth.
The background of that war and how it affected later global events will be discussed Monday night at a special free program hosted by the Henryetta Friends of the Library at 7 p.m. at the civic center.
John Hinkle, a master storyteller with deep roots in the Oklahoma library system, will be wearing a WWI general’s uniform. He will bring to light the impact of three cousins, the Kaiser of Germany, the Czar of Russia, and the King of England, as they slipped into the quagmire of political alliances dragging France, the United States into the fray.
The program will include over 300 slides, a map and more covering the political alliances, scope of the war and it’s ramifications.
Henryetta librarian Joann Hott said the program is something that all ages will benefit from. Members of the Friends of the Library will be on hand with refreshments.
