Henryetta students were reminded that the freedoms they enjoy today were won through the sacrifice of others over the years.
That was the underlying message at the annual HHS Veterans Day assembly Friday morning.
goodnerWith musical selections from the high school and middle school choirs and fourth grade students as well as HHS band, a number of local veterans were honored for their service.
The program started off with Jared Montgomery, a private first class in the national guard, giving the Soldier's Creed. That was followed by Brittany Brewer and Angela Boswell leading the students and guests in the pledge of allegiance.
VFW post 539 commander Bill Goodner told those attending the servicemen and women in the military today are part of the 48 million who have served their country since 1776. “American veterans share the common beliefs of human dignity, democracy and an individuals God-given right of freedom,” he said.
He pointed out many in society today tend to take the freedoms for granted. “They are not free. They were won by generations of veterans who were ready to do what was necessary for our nation’s survival.
“Our country, our citizens owe an unpayable debt to the veterans. Our society owes its very existence to their actions,” he said.
