State Sen. Roger Thompson has won unanimous approval in the Senate for legislation exempting the American Legion from state sales taxes on goods and services. Senate Bill 8 was approved by the full Senate Monday.
American Legion logo“We already exempt organizations like Blue Star Mothers and Veterans of Foreign Wars,” said Thompson, R-Okemah. “This is a deserving organization that should be receiving that same tax break.”
There are 180 American Legion posts throughout Oklahoma and an auxiliary with 143 units. American Legion services include benefits assistance, career fairs and workshops, guidance on education, health care, personal finance and more. They also provide resources geared for women veterans and advocate for gender-specific health care needs.
“In addition to the services, support and advocacy the American Legion provides for veterans, this organization is also an important part of towns and cities throughout our state, sponsoring amateur athletics and teaching young people important values and behaviors like sportsmanship, good citizenship and health and fitness,” Thompson said. “The American Legion promotes patriotism and service, making our communities and our state better for their presence.”
The measure now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
