Oklahoma City musician Hunter Thomas will be performing at Nichols Park Aug. 31.
Tuesday night Henryetta council members approved that concert sponsored by local businessman Steve Sanford.
hunter thomasSanford, who owns Rustler’s BBQ, said he would have the concert at the baseball fields following the Jim Shoulders living Legends Rodeo.
“I’m trying to do an after-rodeo party,” he told the council. Tickets to the concert would be $10 per person. “We will have the concert within the ball park area and clean it up after the concert.” Beer would be sold at that concert.
Sanford said he would have security personnel present and an ambulance would be available.
“I want to bring something new and fun,” he said.
Mayor Jennifer Munholland said an ordinance had been passed some months ago that would allow beer to be sold at special events.
I’m hoping I can pull this off and if it grows bigger I can do something more for the park,” Sanford said.
The council also approved making a nine-hole disc golf course a permanent feature at Nichols.
Joshua Craig said the smaller course was designed to be “friendlier” for beginning players.
“We all know that it has been very active out there,” Munholland said. “It’s been a really great thing for the city.”
Craig pointed out over 200 people participated in the recent Nichols Park Shootout tournament and he is working on another tournament to be held Labor Day weekend. He said it would cost $3,750 to pay for the baskets, signs and mounting.
Another project affecting Nichols Park, replacing bucking chutes at the Living Legends rodeo arena was approved. At the June 10 meeting, members of the Henryetta Economic Development Authority (HEDA) approved spending $29,731.21 to buy and install the chutes.
Council members waived the rental fees for the civic center to be used for the annual barbecue lunch on Labor Day.
Labor Day committee chair Linda Gerster said the lunch is actually sponsored by the Oklahoma AFL-CIO with members of the state Democratic party serving at the dinner. She said she is also looking for other volunteers to help serve at the dinner.
