Tommie Kathyren Gibson, a longtime resident of Henryetta, died Feb. 8, 2020 at the age of 86. She was born Oct. 7, 1933 in the Ash Creek Community near McAlester to Levi Wesley Oneth and Alta May (Simmons) Oneth. Tommie was the third of four children born to this union. She grew up in the Ask Creek Community where she learned to play the piano in their one room church and attended grade school on top of Buffalo Mountain (which was about a 2 mile walk from her home). She was glad to graduate into the 7th grade and transfer to the Crowder School system where, on May 22, 1951, she graduated Valedictorian of her class of twelve students. Two days later she married John H. Gibson in that one room church at Ash Creek. To this union one child was born: Kathyren Elaine Gibson.
In 1956, John, Tommie and Kathy moved to Henryetta where John was employed by Oklahoma Natural Gas. Shortly after, they started their own cattle company. Tommie lived a life of service to others. She was involved in the many activities of the First Baptist Church in Henryetta. She taught Pre-K Sunday School with Mrs. Scott for over 20 years. She was a big supporter and worker for Vacation Bible School and was a member of numerous committees within The First Baptist Church. Tommie also served as a “Pink Lady” on the Henryetta Hospital Auxiliary.
Tommie is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, J.D. Oneth of McAlester; sister Helen Smith of Lone Star, Tex.; brother-in-law Everett Lee Gibson of Blocker, OK; sister-in-law Juanita Gibson, Blocker; two nephews and one niece.
She is survived by her husband: John H. Gibson of 68 years; daughter: Kathyren Elaine Thompson and husband Randy; two grandchildren: Stacy (Thompson) Matray & husband Blaine of Blanchard and Travis John Thompson & wife Sarah of Henryetta; four great grandchildren: Mackenzie Elaine Matray; Mason Joseph Matray; Emma Lynn Thompson and Ella Rose Thompson; brother: Wes Oneth & wife Elaine of Ash Creek Community; six nephews: Mark and Chris Smith; Jeff and Todd Oneth; Roger and Johnny Gibson; niece: Angie (Gibson) Gray; and many First Baptist members and friends; and special friends: Carolyn McAfee and Susan Broadbent, who gave exceptional love and care to Tommie for almost 3 years.
Family will be receiving guests at the Rogers Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 at the Henryetta First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Palsy officiating. Entombment will follow at the Westlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Rogers Funeral Home.
