Masks will not be required by Henryetta students at the annual prom this Saturday.
IMG 0055At the Monday night school board meeting, members of the junior class presented a letter asking the mask mandate be waived for that event. The letter pointed out that no high school student has tested positive for COVID and the county is among those listed as yellow on the state health department map. It was also pointed out other area schools have eased the mask requirements if not lifted them entirely.
The prom this year will be held at the high school cafeteria and students attending will have a temperature check by class sponsors. In addition there will be hand sanitizer available at the tables which will be spaced out.
“We haven’t had any of our students test positive since Feb. 15,” said high school principal Kelly Furer. “There has been no one quarantined district-wide. “We were overly cautious and that is why we are where we are.”
The junior class members said they, “just want to see each other smile and have fun. We haven’t seen each other’s faces in a year.”
High school staff members have either all received one or both of their vaccinations or have already gone through the virus.

That individual had to cancel because of illness but it was not virus-related. “The track teams have won numerous medals in high school meets and continue to get better and better,” he said. “Our girls golf team won three out of five matches and regionals is coming up. The baseball team is improving despite the tough sport pitch rule. We have won more games than in the past three or four years.”
