A Henryetta police officer received serious injuries when he was called to help quell a disturbance at the Moore Detention Facility in Okmulgee Monday night.
Robert Heath had to undergo surgery to repair damage to his fingers and hand after he was struck with a concrete block.
The incident started Monday evening when, according to county sheriff Eddy Rice, several inmate were involved in a fight. Detention facility personnel were unable to get to the inmate and provide medical attention.
That is when the Sheriff’s Office Tactical team was called and members went in forcefully containing the inmates involved. Rice said it took less than 30 minutes to restore calm to the facility.
“There was only a handful of inmates actively participating,” Rice said. “The rest of the prisoners were sitting on their bunks and not causing problems.”
Since the inmates were federal prisoners being housed at the facility, the FBI was called in to assist in the investigation.
Rice said charges will be filed against those involved and could involve federal as well as local charges.
